Creating a Subsite

About Subsites

A Subsite is a special part of your website for a specific target group. They are a great way to add additional content to your main site that targets a different audience, for example, for venue hire or B2B audiences. They’re excel at more content heavy sites with only a handful of events. A Subsite has the following features:

  • Navigation and menu items specific for the Subsite
  • Different footer content
  • Different styling & branding

You can create a Subsite from every main menu item. When navigating to the item, a visitor automatically enters the Subsite. You can also have more than one Subsite!

In this article we will show you how to create a Subsite for the Submenu "Corporate" in the example below.

The submenu Corporate that needs to become a subsite
The submenu Corporate that needs to become a subsite

When properly set up, the Subsite will look something like this:

What a Subsite will look like after setting up. Different Brand colours to the “main” site
What a Subsite will look like after setting up. Different Brand colours to the “main” site

You can see that the submenu "Corporate" of the main website has become the main navigation of the Subsite when you use the hamburger menu.

All other menu items of the main website are gone here, and replaced by a link "Return to website" at the top right.

The header, navigation and footer have different styling and content.

Design & Branding

You can create multiple Subsites in your website, but it is advised to not go overboard here. A sudden change in layout and branding can confuse Visitors.

A Subsite uses the same templates and overall structure as the rest of your Peppered website. These templates can however be styled specifically for the Subsite. You have the following options:

  • Different color scheme in header, navigation & footer
  • Different logo in header
  • Different fonts, font colors and background colors in content areas

Because the entire look and feel of the Subsite can be different from the main website, these options need to be implemented by a Peppered Consultant.

Peppered can also make a design for your Subsite, based on a style guide. Ask us about the options.

Creating a Subsite

🚧
Take note! If you have requested CultureSuite to create a Susbsite with different styling we can do this step for you!

To create a Subsite:

  • Go to Website > Menus module
  • Select Add Menu
  • Set the Type = Subsite
  • Name your Subsite = note this will also be used in the URL
  • URL Alias = this can be a shorter version of the Subsite name to create a shorter URL
  • System name = usually a Peppered Consultant will set this when adding the styling.
    • ⚠️
Take note! Once a system name is added do not change this! Speak with a Peppered Consultant first!

Adding your Subsite Menu and Footer

After you created the Main Menu item of the type Subsite and all underlying submenu items and pages, it is time to create alternate content for the Footer and service menu of the Subsite.

This is done in Website > Subsite Content:

Content from the footer and service menu for the Subsite will be listed here
Content from the footer and service menu for the Subsite will be listed here

To add a new item:

  1. Select the correct main menu item (in this case "doelen_studio1"):
    1. The settings for a Subsite footer
The settings for a Subsite footer
  1. Select a Subsite page as the Landing page. Your Subsite logo will link to that page.
  1. All footer and service menu content you add here will be displayed on all pages in the “doelen_studio1” menu:
